Lake Ol'Bolossat Community Conservation Group (LOCCOG) emerged and officially registered as a Community Based Organization (CBO) on October 15, 2019. This milestone marked the culmination of a thorough review of the Lake Olbolossat Management Plan 2019/2023, a process skillfully facilitated by the East Africa Wildlife Society (EAWLS).
At its core, LOCCOG was envisioned as a unifying force, rallying various community conservation groups from the surrounding area to foster a synchronized approach toward safeguarding the lake's ecological balance.
Since its inception, LOCCOG has been a catalyst, uniting over 40 organized conservation groups spanning across the 7 wards, boasting a collective membership exceeding 4,000 individuals dedicated to diverse conservation initiatives along the lake's catchment areas. These wards encompass Kiriita, Igwamiti, Gatimu, Weru, Rurii, Shamata, and Central.
Guiding LOCCOG's endeavors is a committee comprising 9 executive members elected by groups from all 7 wards, steering the collective vision toward Lake Ol'Bolossat's preservation. Presently, the committee finds its home within the offices of Nyahururu Birds Club (NBC) in Nyahururu.
LOCCOG has fostered robust collaborations with community groups, recently culminating in a comprehensive profiling initiative that identified and connected all conservation groups operating around the lake. Moreover, we've facilitated partnerships by organizing joint events such as World Bamboo Day, World Wetlands Day, and World Nature Conservation Day, serving as platforms to link groups with vital allies.
Through these concerted efforts, the community groups have reignited their conservation fervor, channeling renewed determination and energy towards the restoration and protection of Lake Olbolossat.
