What we do

Thematic Areas

LOCCOG’s goal is to protect, restore and sustainably manage the Lake Ol’Bolossat ecosystem and catchment’s rich biodiversity comprising of wildlife, birds, fish, and the environment for posterity.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Conservation

Habitat restoration and protection: Tree planting campaigns: LOCCOG will continue to do tree planting by reforesting the degraded forests using indigenous tree species and in the farms through agroforestry using both indigenous and commercially viable tree species.
Riparian restoration to rehabilitate springs and streams at Kirima-Muruai (eastern side) and the western side of the Lake.
Invasive species management and control through circular economy initiatives such as briquettes and biochar from silvinia molesta
Wildlife conservation: Protection of hippos and birds and beekeeping as pollinators and for economic livelihoods.

Community Engagement through sensitization and capacity improvement

LOCCOG will continue environmental awareness and sensitization meetings focusing on the value of the lake’s biodiversity.
LOCCOG will also use lead farmer’s plots as demonstration farms to promote agroforestry and sustainable agricultural practices around the lake to mitigate on the effects of climate change so as to build resilience for farmers in the catchment.
Youth and women inclusion in capacity building, decision making, training and leadership development in environmental conservation and enterprise.

Sustainable Livelihoods Linked to Conservation

LOCCOG is actively managing an ecotourism site at the Lake. The organization in partnership with Nyahururu Birds Club(NBC)has trained youth community guides for birdwatching, nature walks, and hippo viewing.
Through the support of Savanah Beekeeping, LOCCOG community members have been trained on (Apiculture). Other than providing honey, beekeeping promotes pollination of native plants, ensuring continuity of plant genomes.
Community members and smallholder farmers will be trained in agribusiness for sustainable farming that promotes agroforestry in the catchment.

Advocacy, Education and Partnership building

LOCCOG collaborates with authorities by working closely with Kenya Forestry Services(KFS), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the County Government of Nyandarua and research institutions.
